Brunton was a physician at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He is perhaps best known for the use of amyl nitrite in the treatment of angina. Brunton delivered the Croonian Lecture in 1889 on The Chemical structure of Physiological Action. Brunton was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1874.
